What happened
On August 20, 2026, Anthropic published a blog post announcing that computer use, a new browser use tool, the Skills API, and the Files API are generally available on the Claude Platform. Computer use lets an AI agent take screenshots and issue mouse and keyboard actions, clicking, typing, and scrolling, inside a software environment. The update lets Claude take several of those actions in a single turn instead of one at a time, which Anthropic says finishes tasks in fewer calls. Computer use is also now eligible for HIPAA-regulated workloads under Anthropic's Business Associate Agreement. The new browser use tool works alongside computer use but is built specifically for web pages: instead of only reading pixels from a screenshot, it reads the structure of a page, so an agent can target a specific form field or button by reference rather than guessing coordinates. One detail matters here and did not make every headline: browser use does not run its own browser. The developer's own application still has to execute each action inside a browser environment it controls and manages, session by session. Anthropic decides what the agent wants to do; the business building on top of it still has to actually do it. The Skills API lets a team upload and version a "skill," a folder of instructions, scripts, and templates that captures how that business actually does something, then attach it to a request. Skills run inside Anthropic's own code execution sandbox, so a business does not need to host anything itself. The Files API is storage for documents an agent reads or produces: upload a PDF or spreadsheet once, reference it by ID afterward instead of resending it, with 1 TB of storage per organization and automatic file expiration. According to Anthropic's own Claude API documentation and release notes, computer use came out of beta on August 19, 2026, with the Files API and Skills API following the next day. The Skills API and Files API are also now available through Microsoft Foundry, and Anthropic says the updated computer use and browser use tools are coming soon to Google Cloud's Vertex AI. Existing beta integrations keep working while customers migrate. The same week, Google Cloud's own blog announced it is expanding Google Antigravity, its agentic coding platform, into Gemini Enterprise with admin governance and spend controls. That is not the subject of this post, but it is worth naming: more than one major vendor moved agent tooling from experimental to admin-governed production infrastructure in the same few days.
Why it matters for business owners
Most business owners will never call Anthropic's API directly. What they will do, likely without noticing the exact date, is use software that starts advertising an "AI agent" or "AI assistant" feature that can now fill out a form, navigate a portal, or handle a document on their behalf. General availability is the signal that the underlying technology behind those features has moved from something a vendor was still testing carefully to something stable enough to ship in a real product, across more than one cloud platform. That shift changes the pace at which this shows up in the tools a business already pays for. A capability that used to require a vendor's engineering team to build a careful, custom integration around a beta feature can now be assembled from documented, supported building blocks. The practical effect for an owner is that the question moves from "will my software vendor eventually add an AI agent that touches my systems" to "which of my vendors is doing that first, and what did they actually build around it."
What owners should not misunderstand
General availability does not mean an AI agent now runs your computer unsupervised. Computer use and browser use give a model the ability to request an action inside an environment that a developer or vendor sets up, configures, and controls. The browser use tool is the clearest example: it does not include its own browser. The vendor's own application has to actually carry out each click and read the result back. The permission boundaries, the sandboxing, and the oversight are decisions the business building the product makes, not something the underlying technology hands over automatically. It also does not mean every tool advertising an "AI agent" today was built on this specific release, or that HIPAA eligibility under Anthropic's Business Associate Agreement means any particular vendor's implementation is actually compliant. Eligibility describes what a properly configured integration can qualify for, not a guarantee about how a specific product configured it. And "coming soon to Vertex AI" is exactly that: an availability roadmap, not evidence that Google's version already works the same way today.
The operational lesson
As agent tooling like this becomes standardized, documented infrastructure spread across more than one cloud provider, the technology itself stops being the differentiator. Any vendor with engineering time can now build an agent that clicks through a web portal or manages a business's documents. What stays different from one vendor's product to the next, and what an owner actually needs to evaluate, is the governance layer wrapped around that capability: which actions require a human to confirm before they happen, what the agent is actually allowed to touch, and where a record of what it did gets kept. This is the same lesson that showed up when an AI agent was found to hold real management authority over a human employee in one specific business, and when a desktop AI feature was found to record a user's on-screen activity into memory files. Each time, the underlying capability outpaced how clearly the vendor had thought through the oversight around it. General availability of computer use and browser use means this pattern is about to show up in more products, faster, because more vendors can now build on the same stable foundation instead of each one experimenting from scratch.
What a serious business should do next
When a software vendor tells you a product now includes an AI agent that operates inside your systems, browses on your behalf, or handles your documents, ask four specific questions before adopting it: what environment does the agent actually execute in and who controls it, what data or systems can it reach, does a human review or approve higher-stakes actions before they happen, and where are the logs of what it did actually kept. Do not treat "generally available," "HIPAA eligible," or "enterprise" as a substitute for those answers. Those labels describe what the underlying technology and contract terms can support, not what any specific vendor actually built. If your team is building an integration directly on Anthropic's, Microsoft's, or (soon) Google's version of this tooling, treat the permission design, the human checkpoint, and the audit trail as the actual engineering work, not an afterthought layered on once the agent already works. Finally, expect this to keep moving. Anthropic has said the updated computer use and browser use tools are coming to Google Cloud's Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry already carries the Skills and Files APIs. A tool that does not have an AI agent feature today may have one within months, built on the same infrastructure this post describes.
